The Spice Scale

Spice is how steamy a book gets. Darkness is how heavy the themes are. They are not the same: a book can be dark with low spice, or sweet with high spice.

●●●●● 1

Sweet. Kissing, closed door.

●●●●● 2

Warm. Some heat, mostly fade to black.

●●●●● 3

Steamy. Open door scenes, not every chapter.

●●●●● 4

Hot. Frequent, detailed open door scenes.

●●●●● 5

Scorching. Very explicit and frequent. Often kinks.

Examples

• Twisted Love: about a 3 to 4
• Fourth Wing: about a 3
• Butcher and Blackbird: about a 4
• Den of Vipers: a 5

Blind dates list spice on the wrap. If a product shows a spice level, it uses this scale.
